Chuck Wood is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from Northwest New Jersey with more than 45 years of experience in music. He has recorded and toured the U.S. with his friend Arjun Alan Bruggeman (Krishna Das) in their world percussion band known as Ghandharva. He has also appeared live or recorded with Neal Casal, Michael Franti, David Darling, John Ginty, Robert Randolph, Tribe After Tribe (featuring the South African musician Robbie Robb, Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam and Doug Pinnick of King’s X) Three Fish, Anthony Krizon (Spin Doctors), From Good Homes, Roamin’ Gabriels, and Ganga Giri.
The instruments he plays are West African in nature, including the djembe, doun doun and shekeree; some are rooted in the South American culture such as the congas and berimbau. Chuck has studied these various instruments with Baba Olatunji, M’Beba Bangoura, Titos Sompa, Mohammed Camera, Yaya Nelson, Ladji Camera, Mar Gueye and Glen Webber. Recently he has begun recording and performing on the electric guitar playing the instrument in his own unique style. |
In 2019 Chuck released his first full length solo recording titled " A New Beginning" This new recording features current band members Jeff Hambright and Maria Haydon, along with many guest muscians including: Neal Casal, Joe Cirotti, Mary Moses, Nadine La Fond, and Mike Esposito. All tracks recorded and produced by John Ginty.
He has since formed a Worldbeat band to support the release, and can be seen performing live in various venues all over the Northeast United States. @chuckwoodband
Since 2004 Chuck has been exploring the art of accompanying yoga classes with live drumming. This experience has led him across the US, playing for various styles such as Anusara, Vinyasa Flow, Kripalu, Hatha and Kundalini. He has been on the leading edge of the yoga and live music scene that is flourishing throughout the country today. Starting this endeavor out as a solo performer, he would later involve guitarist Colin Allured from North Carolina. Together they would evolve into the recording and touring project known as Dhamaru, releasing one full length record and an EP.
Chuck also accompanies many forms of dance including African dance, modern, jazz, tap and NIA. He enjoys playing for free form dance styles as well, such as trance dance and ecstatic dance. He has worked with choreographers Mark Morris, Jo Ann Staugaard-Jones, Kim Pinto, NIA co-creator Debbie Rosas, Caroline Kohles, Casey Bernstein, and Yoga Trance Dance instructors Amy Jeanette and Mary Ellen Ricks. Teaching hand-drumming, specifically the djembe, is also a part of his many talents.
Whether performing solo or with a band, Chuck loves the art of music and rhythm, and continues to explore its depths through live performance and recording.
